Glaucoma. What is it? How to treat it?
Glaucoma is known as the "Silent thief of sight" because in its early stages, you feel no pain or any symptoms. It will steal your sight before you know you have the disease. More than 4 million people have Glaucoma and 2 million don't know it yet. Anyone can have Glaucoma, but some people are at higher risk:
· Anyone over 60 years of age
· African-Americans over 40 years of age
· Diabetics
· Individuals with a family history of Glaucoma
Unfortunately, any loss to Glaucoma is permanent. However, there is good news: there are steps you can take to protect yourself against vision loss from Glaucoma. Studies show that early detection and treatment of Glaucoma before it causes major vision loss is the best way to control the disease. Treatment for the most common form of Glaucoma includes medication, laser, and surgery.
